Chapters – interactive story app

There are a few things in this world that make me feel like me. One of those things is reading. I love to read! I know you’re thinking, duh, since I am also a writer, but I really do. Even if I had never started writing, I think I would still love to read. It’s amazing the power a good book has. It can take you to another universe away from your current woes and build a new world within your mind. A good writer can actually turn on a part of your brain that stops reading words and starts seeing images from those words.

That’s what I hope to give to my readers. I hope to be that writer with every one of the books I publish.

For a while there, I hadn’t been reading or writing. Life just gets so busy, and the things you love to do sometimes get out on the back burner. Now that I found the Chapters app, though, I’m hoping to overcome some of those struggles.

Every night before bed, I look at my phone. I scroll through Instagram and Facebook and all the other RSS feeds Google pins to my phone. It consumes my night before I fall asleep. As much as I like going through social media and catching up on current events, I’m finding reading the multitude of free(ish) books on the Chapters app has started filling the gnawing desire to read a good book again.

Naming my own character. Dressing her. Choosing hairstyles. Picking what she may say. It’s actually also filling my control freak side! Like, who doesn’t read a book and sometimes think: oh, that name could have been way better if it were Dahveney!

Just me?..

Anyway, these stories are on the shorter side, and most all are romance with other lesser developed themes, but each story is providing that world building phenomenon my brain has been craving. There is a huge time and money sink aspect to the app.

Buy these diamonds for greater dialogue selections. Get more tickets for $0.99 to continue reading. Watch an ad and read right now!

It totally sucks having to wait. Currently I have another 1:43.23 before I get to finish the current read I’m on now, but I’m hoping it’s worth the wait.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I hope you are enjoying your day with loved ones, and finding the romance in your life. Even if you’re not and want to wear black today to honor the demise of your love life, take heart and know that love has all different forms. Someone in this world loves you. I promise you that!

I also want to take a minute to express to women the responsibility that I believe we ignore on such occasions. Not just Valentine’s Day, but most relationship rooted events like anniversaries. It is not solely your significant other’s job to celebrate the day by showering you with kindness in the form of gifts or other presentations of their affection. We must also do the same. Didn’t your momma ever say do unto others as you want done unto you, or something like that?

Take the initiative this Valentine’s Day, ladies, and surprise your man with a big red heart filled with chocolate. Bring him a bouquet of flowers, or donuts, or whatever he’s into. It take two to be in a relationship, and if he isn’t getting any special treatment for the day, why do you believe that you should?

Food for thought. That is all.

Book Review: A Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas

I know I am late to the party on this one, but I just had to give my review of this novel. I’m a sucker for historical romance as it as, so through in some fantasy and mysterious characters and I’m all in! In all, it probably took me about 8 reading hours to finish this novel. Every time I opened it, I was immediately sucked into the story and easily followed along the journey, which is hard to do with how many times I have to open and close any book between work and family demands.

Time to dig a little deeper!7896527

Goodreads: After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her … but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead … quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

High School Reunion

baim-hanif-89800I can’t believe it is my husband’s ten year high school reunion!

For those who do not know, my husband and I met in high school my freshman year. From the first few months of my first year of high school, he and I became best friends, and soon, our budding relationship turned romantic. Fast forward to almost thirteen years later, and we are wondering where the time has gone?

It feels like yesterday when we were sitting in our science and Spanish class passing notes to each other. Those florescent white lights beaming down on us as we snuck through the halls for quick kisses feels like such a new memory, not one that has gathered ten years of dust!

I think back on our high school days, all of which we didn’t particularly enjoy, and wonder, what was the rush about? Why were we so anxious to get out of school when now it feels like it was over in a blink of an eye? Why did it feel like such slow torture in the moment, but looking back on it now, it barely seems like a fragment of a second in our lives?

Ten years ago, I would have never guessed what I would be today. I am proud of what we have, what we’ve accomplished and become, but I am most proud of who we are together.

Back in high school, the drama seemed never ending, but now, I realize, it was barely even a chapter in the book of the rest of lives.

Moral of the story on this bit, my friends: don’t squander a moment, for it passes faster than you realize and fades from memory even quicker.

The Alyeska Ski Resort and Spa near Anchorage, Alaska is known for its beautiful mountains, relaxing environment, and delicious dining, but for Kayleigh Wilson, a trip to the frozen tundra was meant to offer so much more. After a past full of pain, she lived her life based on how little she had to feel, so when her brother offered a weekend trip to the resort where no one even knew her name, she jumped at the opportunity. For Kayleigh, this trip was exactly what she needed to put herself back in the game of dating and romance, but she never planned on meeting a man who could actually alleviate her past and allow her to experience every emotion she had shut off so long ago. Benjamin Thomas, the man who awakens her heart from hibernation, is full of his own pain, but in his mind, some secrets are better left unshared. As Kayleigh faces her past and confronts Ben’s, she fights to keep herself from falling back into the darkness of unfeeling, but it may be at a price she isn’t willing to pay.

I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz

16153993This song has been stuck in my head all day! I’m not sure why, maybe I heard it on the radio or in a store during Valentine’s day, but for whatever reason, I can’t stop singing it.

When I look into your eyes
It’s like watching the night sky
Or a beautiful sunrise
Well, there’s so much they hold
And just like them old stars
I see that you’ve come so far
To be right where you are
How old is your soul?

I’ve read where some look to make a deeper meaning of the song, and if that’s what you need to connect whatever dots in your mind need connecting then have at it. I, on the other hand, take it on the very literal sense. My logical brain at work again.

Well, I won’t give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I’m giving you all my love
I’m still looking up

Just those few lines designated as chorus hit me deep in my soul. I think I have said it before in a previous post (Find The One Who Will Lift You Up), life and love isn’t always pretty. It’s a messy, fumbling state of being chosen by two people. It’s harsh and demanding and at times completely overwhelming.

And when you’re needing your space
To do some navigating
I’ll be here patiently waiting
To see what you find

But it’s in those moments of hardship the choice these two individuals made to give their everything to try and be together tests their commitment. It’s in those moments of trial and tribulation that the very decision they made is second guessed and every flaw is exposed in the very foundation of the relationship.

‘Cause even the stars they burn
Some even fall to the earth
We’ve got a lot to learn
God knows we’re worth it
No, I won’t give up

It is also in these moments that another choice is brought to light, another fork in the road must be examined. Do these people continue to hold on to their original commitment and fight to remain together, or do they give in to the pressure closing in on them? Do the choose each other or choose to go on without the other?

I don’t wanna be someone who walks away so easily
I’m here to stay and make the difference that I can make
Our differences they do a lot to teach us how to use
The tools and gifts we got, yeah, we got a lot at stake
And in the end, you’re still my friend at least we did intend
For us to work we didn’t break, we didn’t burn
We had to learn how to bend without the world caving in
I had to learn what I’ve got, and what I’m not, and who I am

It is only after the choice is made again to see the relationship through, to continue to fight for the love you promised to give, to not give up on just the other person involved in this promise, but to not give up on the collective you, the encompassing us, does that love continue to grow.

I won’t give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I’m giving you all my love
I’m still looking up, I’m still looking up.

It is the next step after renewing the promise that counts the most.prove that you are giving all of your love, all of yourself to your significant other. Prove to not only just the other person, but to yourself as well that you are and always will be even if the skies get rough.

Well, I won’t give up on us (no I’m not giving up)
God knows I’m tough enough (I am tough, I am loved)
We’ve got a lot to learn (we’re alive, we are loved)
God knows we’re worth it (and we’re worth it)

Because God knows we’re worth it. God knows that our love is worth it.

I won’t give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I’m giving you all my love
I’m still looking up

And continue to move forward together through every storm. Continue to choose each other and never hang your head in defeat. Give all of yourself to your commitment of love, and, God knows, it’s worth it.

Book Review: Lady of Valor by Lara Adrian

I read this novel a while ago, but Lara Adrian aka Tina St. John is my go to when it comes to historical romance, and I can’t help but coming back to the Warrior novels whenever I’m looking for a spicy read. I think I’ve read this one at least four times, and each time, it never fails to warm me up and lift my romantic heart.

Left a widow by her cruel husband’s death, Lady Emmalyn of Fallonmour is determined to control her own destiny, until her hard-won vows of independence are threatened by the mysterious warrior sent to protect her castle on order of the king. Emmalyn is now at the mercy of Sir Cabal, a feared knight known as Blackheart.

Skilled at war and hiding a tormented past, Cabal swears allegiance to no one but himself and his country. But once he meets Emmalyn, he finds his strength tested by this proud beauty who stirs his blood with desire, tempting him to defy his king and surrender his heart.
