One of the things I have found a new love for is hiking! When I say hiking, I mean a few to multiple miles walk through the woods, on a trail, preferably with a general notion of direction. As long as I end up back at my car eventually, I’m good!
We’ve hiked a total of three times since Memorial Day, so I’m definitely no pro, but there’s something peaceful to be found in the tranquility of nature. I swear I could walk for days in the woods filled with green or through an open field with bright blue skies above.
Our hikes haven’t been very long in distance, but we are building up to it. Even our daughter is getting into it! We did about two miles with her over the past weekend, and I think she likes it too! She was so excited to see a bridge over a river. It was the cutest thing!
We also bought water backpacks for our trips. Even one for our four year old. She loves carrying hers and drinking it out of the tube like mommy and daddy. We are hoping to make an afternoon of it one day and have a picnic, but we’re building to that. She’s still building her stamina to go longer than two miles in an hour..
Overall, hiking for us works. There is hardly any logistics or equipment to think of and remember. We just fill out water tanks and go! Bugs are a problem for my daughter (OK, for me too), but that’s why there is bug repellent right? I’m just excited to do something as a family that doesn’t require a whole lot of extra effort and towing additional equipment. On to the next hike!
As I’ve said numerous times before, I need to get back in shape. Since having my daughter FOUR YEARS ago, I haven’t been taking the best care of myself as far as diet and exercise. I keep telling myself that I had a baby, my body isn’t the same, but how much longer can I use that as an excuse. (Rhetorical, don’t answer that.)
I know I need to get it all back under control, so I let my friend talk me into going to Pure Barre. I was able to take an introductory class for free, and my friend even let me borrow her Barre socks. It’s a thing.
Going into class, I honestly was trying to keep an open mind. I genuinely hoped it would be a ballet type bar class, but it was far from that. The instructor kept mentioning micro movements, muscle isolations, moving by an inch, and contracting all of your muscles. It was a lot to concentrate on. At no point though, did I feel like I was back in ballet class, warming up at the bar.
The class was fifty minutes long. My muses shook with most of the moments, a clear indication that I need strength training, but I missed cardio. The instructor kept saying the shake is good, but I felt like a vibrating chair rolling down a milled up highway with how much my muscles shook! It definitely was a work out! After class, I felt energized and ready to take on the evening. It was kind of hard to go to sleep that night, honestly.
It was a great experience. One that I will probably never repeat, but a memory, nonetheless. Some people love the classes, like my friend, but I think I’ll stick with my yoga.
Those socks were really nice though. 😁
