My Husband’s Triumphant Thirtieth Birthday

chamberlin801911881-04938898784.jpgToday is my husband’s thirtieth birthday! He and I met when he was 15 and I was 14. Now officially marks the year when I have known him just as long as I haven’t. He lived 15 years without me, and has now lived 15 years with me. Makes us sound old, but as high school sweethearts, our milestones will be plentiful.

It’s crazy to think of our teenage selves back in high school and all the years after that we went through together. The phrase “growing together” has never made more sense as we have accomplished so much by each others sides. We have worked so hard for everything we have that I know with this monumental birthday we are heading for even greater. I can’t imagine what my life would be like without him, and I thank my lucky stars everyday that I never have to wonder.

I’ve heard people call this the “dirty thirty” birthday, but I promise you, babe, this year will be the Triumphant Thirty. I love you!

Insomniac Rambling – Love and Greed

To be enough for someone in a world full of greed is everything.

No! Just, no!

I saw this on Instagram as a poem someone wrote (not sure who posted it, can’t find it again), and I just need to say no. No, this is wrong. So wrong you can’t make enough U-turns to make it right. Just wrong!

I can see someone attempting to make the argument that maybe they are talking about love. Love is selfless. Love is about giving your all and then some to allow the person you have the feelings for to flourish with you. Love is the opposite of greed, therefore, to have found someone who wants to give you all of themselves is a gift not to be squandered. I get it. I dig it. You’re on the right track, but the first sentence in this post does not capture the idea of unselfish love.

The first sentence goes wrong the moment it assumes you weren’t enough for someone, anyone, in this world. You are always enough! It’s just up to the other person to see it, to know your value as much as you know your own worth.

Next, I read this sentence to say that your measurement in a person’s life is in your control. Again, this is wrong. It ties into the first part, but let me dig a little deeper. Greed is a terrible affliction. Nothing is ever enough. So, to say that you should be able to measure up to that amount of endless wanting, to be able to compete with the constant yearning, and possibly be greater than the desire for more in someone else is completely out of your control. Not only do you have to selflessly give yourself over to the one you love, but they in kind must also forget all pretenses and expectations in a world of over consumption and gluttony and share their selfless love, too.

Finally, to say that finding someone who may hold you higher than all other wants and needs is everything is horribly cheap. I would never want someone who wants me more than some goal or objective they may be trying to obtain. One day, those things they once ignored may suddenly float higher than your pedastool, and then your everything is now your barely something. Only when love holds it’s own category, it’s on permanent residence in two people’s lives will that love be everything.

Go to bed, Lindsay. I know. 🙂

Alyeska is a second chance romance for Ben and Kayleigh. Born and raised in the deep South of Texas, Kayleigh knew nothing about real snow and a winter breeze that can cut through you, but her journey to the tundra of Alaska was about more than a ski trip on the fresh powder. After a painful past, this weekend adventure was supposed to put her back into the world of dating. She’s determined to do it! Only she never imaged having to face her dark memories so soon. It shouldn’t have happened this way. It shouldn’t feel like a repeat! Then a voice, the most miraculously commanding voice she has ever heard echoed through her mind and rescued her from another horrid memory. He saved her, but Kayleigh will soon find out, he needs saving, too.

Thirteen years and counting

We were in high school, sitting in our new assigned seats as our earth science teacher moaned on about sedimentary rocks. I had seen him around school, always making others laugh, totally the class clown. We even shared another class together besides this one, but I had never spoken to him. I all but wrote him off after the first week of school when every word that left his mouth was another joke.

But this day was different. This day, sitting in that classroom next to him and looking into his stormy blue gray eyes, something had changed. He wasn’t the clown anymore. He wasn’t spouting another string of banter, basking in the laughter of our classmates.

No. Today, he was asking me to be his without so much of a hint of hilarity in his smile, only hopeful reciprocation. He was sitting in his assigned seat next to me exuding anticipation as he awaited my answer. He was looking into my eyes with such sincerity and stealing my heart.

This day, thirteen years ago, my now husband asked me to be his, and everyday since then, I have loved him more and more.

Happy (dating) anniversary, babe!

Call me Mommy pt. 7

The sweetest sound in the world to the thirsty eyes and ears of a parent is a child excitedly calling their name with the biggest smile their little cheeks can hold.

Five days without seeing my girl. Four nights without bedtime kisses. It’s a barren state of being when your reason for existing isn’t readily at your side.

I’m being dramatic, but hey, I’m a fiction writer.

It feels like so long since I have seen my baby girl, hardly a baby now at almost three years old, but the moment we walk through the door to pick her up from her grandparents, that smile, that hug, those kisses, make the world tilt right side up again.

“Mommy!” She yells. “Dahey!”

We need to work on pronouncing our D’s, but it’s the most beautiful thing I have ever heard.

I would do anything for that little smile, and those hugs are enough to melt you through. I finally feel whole again, and now, it’s beack to the old routine! Plus or minus a few sleepless nights as punishment for being gone so long.

Heading home pt. 6

Dear, goodness, if I never see mountains again, it will be too soon! Fall has hit early in Colorado, and the leaves are already changing to vibrant orange, yellow, and red. There is even snow capping the peaks at higher elevations and blocking out the view of your windshield as we cross over the range. It’s an eerie feeling driving over a snowy mountain in a state that doesn’t believe in guardrails.

The ride back to Denver over the mountains is bittersweet. I’m so happy to be going home, but leaving my newly wedded friends two thousand miles away hurts me. I have the curse of waking up entirely too early after a night of partying, so the morning of our departure, we pack up and hit the road for our five hour drive back to Denver. It makes me sad not to be able to say goodbye, but the memories of the night before will be all I need to carry me through until next time.

It was my second time off the East coast. My first time in Colorado and it’s time zone. My first time to the Rockies and seeing the Rio Grande. The furthest from home I have ever been. The longest time away from my daughter I have ever spent.

And the biggest moment of my best friend’s life thus far, getting married.

It was a huge trip full of amazing experiences and moments to remember for the rest of our lives, but as our flight lands, I am so happy to be home!

I can’t wait to see my little girl and feel her little arms and legs wrap around me in the biggest monkey hug her little body can give me! I can’t wait to hear that little voice and see that sweet smile when we pick her up and bring her home! Anticipation is driving me nuts!
