Movie Review: Jurassic World

jurassic-world-hero-logo-v4I have watched every Jurassic movie that has come out since the original when I was a kid. To this day I still have dreams of velociraptors chasing after me, but I do like these movies. Now that Chris Pratt is in them, I love them even more!

IMDb: A new theme park, built on the original site of Jurassic Park, creates a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur, the Indominus Rex, which escapes containment and goes on a killing spree.

The part Ian Malcom plays in these movies has always been my favorite. Since the very first Jurassic Park movie, Ian is anti-dinosaurs being brought back to the world, and he has some of the best lines.

Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.

I’ll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you’re using here, it didn’t require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn’t earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don’t take any responsibility for it.

Don’t you see the danger, John, inherent in what you’re doing here? Genetic power is the most awesome force the planet’s ever seen, but you wield it like a kid that’s found his dad’s gun.

And finally, Jurassic World quotes.

How many times do you have to see the evidence? How many times must the point be made? We’re causing our own extinction. Too many red lines have been crossed, and our home has, in fundamental ways, been polluted by avarice and political megalomania. Genetic power has now been unleashed and of course, that’s going to be catastrophic. This change was inevitable from the moment we brought the first dinosaur back from extinction. We convince ourselves that sudden change is something that happens outside the normal order of things, like a car crash, or that it’s beyond our control, like a fatal illness. We don’t conceive of sudden, radical, irrational change as woven into the very fabric of existence. Yet, I can assure you, it most assuredly is. And it’s happening now. Humans and dinosaurs are now going to be forced to coexist. These creatures were here before us. And if we’re not careful, they’re going to be here after. We’re going to have to adjust to new threats that we can’t imagine. We’ve entered a new era. Welcome to Jurassic World.

The story of all these movies has been, even if we harness the ability, should we use it? There is a God-syndrome that is clear in people who believe they are creating or have already created something they believe no one else could do. They think they control the power, the knowledge, the ability to do it over and over again, but as the wise Dr. Malcom continues to say, there is science, and there is God. And these scientist are playing with something they neither understand nor control.

Now that the dinosaurs have been released into the world, it will be interesting to see how it plays out, if it plays out, in future iterations. I can’t imagine there would be much more to play with in the current universe of people co-existing with dinosaurs, but I’m sure these writers will find a way!
